Become a Sourcerer's Apprentice!
If you're a full-time student interested in improving the GNU Toolchain, you should be a Sourcerer's Apprentice!
The Sourcerer's Apprentice program will give you a chance to learn about and improve GCC (the compiler used on GNU/Linux and many other systems) and other parts of the GNU Toolchain. You will be paid to learn, while working with CodeSourcery's team of expert GNU Toolchain developers.
As an Apprentice, your obligations will be minimal. You will be free to work on whatever aspect of GNU Toolchain development most interests you. While you will be expected to make at least one improvement to the GNU Toolchain each month, you will be free to adjust your level of effort to accommodate your studies and other commitments.
You will also have the opportunity to demonstrate the high level of talent that CodeSourcery demands of its full-time Sourcerers. CodeSourcery plans to hire at least one Apprentice for a full-time GNU Toolchain development position during the summer of 2008. If you're selected, you'll have the experience of working with CodeSourcery's expert development team, building a real-world, industrial strength compiler. You'll also join your fellow Sourcerers on a trip (expenses paid, of course!) to the GCC Summit in Ottawa, Canada. And, of course, when you graduate, you'll be considered for full-time employment.
Requirements
To be eligible for the Sourcerer's Apprentice program, you must meet the following requirements:
You must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited university.
-
You must have submitted at least three patches for the GNU Compiler Collection, GNU Binary Utilities, GNU Debugger, GNU C Library, Newlib, Eclipse, or other GNU Toolchain component. These patches may be improvements or corrections to the code, documentation, build scripts, or any other aspect of the projects named.
If you do not have a copyright assignment on file with the Free Software Foundation, maintainers may not be able to apply your patches. In that case, CodeSourcery would still like you to demonstrate your interest and ability by submitting patches. After you become a Sourcerer's Apprentice, CodeSourcery's assignment will apply, and so patches you develop during your apprenticeship will be acceptable.
If you are a United States resident, you must not accept any compensation, sponsorship, scholarship, or other similar consideration from CodeSourcery's competitors while you remain in the Sourcerer's Apprentice program.
- You must be a resident of California, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Mexico, or Pennsylvania, or the United Kingdom. If you live outside of these jurisdictions, please send mail to apprentice@codesourcery.com. CodeSourcery will consider exceptionally qualified residents of other jurisdictions.
The initial wage for all Apprentices will be $15/hr (in the US) or £7/hr (in the UK). Except as required by law, Apprentices will receive no benefits (such as health insurance or pension benefits).
CodeSourcery may terminate this program at any time, without notice.
How to Apply
